Alfa Romeo announces the 2028 Giulia and Stelvio will offer EV, hybrid, and gasoline engines due to uneven EV demand. A shift from full electrification to versatility.

Alfa Romeo has revised its development strategy: the next-generation Giulia and Stelvio, scheduled for 2028, will be available not only as electric vehicles but also with hybrid and gasoline engines. The decision is driven by uneven EV demand across different regions.

Initially, Stellantis had planned to make both models fully electric. However, the company is now reintroducing internal combustion engines and plug-in hybrids to maintain global competitiveness. Alfa Romeo's CEO stated that the market is not ready for full electrification and that the brand must account for the needs of various countries.

Both models will shift to the new STLA Large platform, designed to accommodate multiple powertrain types. Electric versions will feature batteries up to 118 kWh, providing a range of over 600 km. Hybrid variants will likely use a 1.6-liter turbo engine paired with an electric motor and a battery around 21 kWh. Base versions will retain gasoline engines with a mild hybrid system.

This move reflects a broader industry trend: automakers are reconsidering full-electrification plans due to weak EV demand in certain regions. The new Giulia and Stelvio will become more versatile, offering a wide range of powertrains while maintaining their premium positioning.

The decision to abandon a complete EV transition shows that the market is not yet ready for radical changes. Alfa Romeo is betting on flexibility—and that could be key to sustaining sales in the coming years.
