Discover the BYD Ocean-V concept electric minivan unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show, featuring rear-hinged doors, a lounge-like interior, and next-gen Blade batteries for up to 1000 km range.

At the Beijing Auto Show, reporters from 32CARS captured one of BYD's most unusual concepts: the Ocean V minivan. It stands out not only for its bright blue body and marine-themed stand design, but also for its layout with rear-hinged doors, a nearly open side opening, and a cabin that feels more like a lounge area than a traditional family vehicle. For BYD, this is a major statement of intent for a new type of electric minivan in China.

The reporter noted the car's very short hood, steeply raked windshield, almost seamless side glazing, and a floating roof effect. Up front, there's no classic grille—instead, a light strip sits at the base of the windshield, alongside vertical daytime running lights and a smooth, aerodynamic nose.

The concept's key feature is its doors: front and rear panels open toward each other, essentially turning the side opening into an open display area. This trick is already used by Chinese brands to showcase future cars, but with BYD, it feels less like a design gimmick and more like a rethink of how you enter a family EV.

Official specifications are still scarce, but preliminary reports suggest the Ocean V will be an electric minivan based on a new platform with next-gen Blade batteries. Chinese media have floated a target range of around 1000 km for similar projects, though production figures may vary from the show concept. What matters is that BYD is clearly preparing a future model for the fast-growing electric MPV segment, not just a pure showpiece.

The interior is done in light tones with blue and yellow accents. The seats look like individual capsules with plush side bolsters, while the dashboard sheds conventional bulk: a display sits front and center, leaving a minimalist control zone for the driver. Next to rivals like the Zeekr MIX and other new Chinese minivans, the Ocean V focuses on a sense of spaciousness rather than traditional bus-like practicality.

China's minivan market is shifting fast: buyers are increasingly prioritizing tech, quietness, range, and cabin-use scenarios over sheer size and seat count. That puts clear rivals in the Ocean V's path—the Zeekr MIX, Xpeng X9, Li Auto Mega, Denza D9, and upcoming Geely Galaxy models. But BYD has a trump card in its scale of production, its own battery technology, and an extensive dealer network.

For the family segment, a car like this matters because the minivan is no longer a purely utilitarian machine. The Ocean V takes a different approach: it's not a box on wheels but a mobile space for the city, travel, and relaxation. If the production version retains even some of the concept's ideas, BYD will have a model that can compete not only on price but also on image.
