Mitsubishi recalls 108,046 Outlander and Outlander PHEV in the US due to defective gas struts that may cause the tailgate to drop unexpectedly, increasing injury risk. Free repairs offered.

Mitsubishi has recalled 108,046 vehicles in the United States, covering the Outlander and Outlander PHEV models. The issue stems from defective gas struts on the tailgate, which can cause it to drop unexpectedly and increase the risk of injury to owners.

According to the NHTSA, the problem involves potential damage to the gas cylinder. As a result, the tailgate may not stay open or could close suddenly. The recall affects popular crossover models, making it a sensitive matter for Mitsubishi's reputation in the U.S. market.

The fault lies in the lift mechanism components — the gas struts that hold the tailgate in place. When they fail, vehicle safety is compromised. The automaker has already prepared a fix: dealers will replace both the left and right gas struts free of charge. This is a standard procedure that does not require major intervention.

The Outlander remains Mitsubishi's key model in the U.S., especially in the hybrid segment. While a large recall may temporarily shake customer confidence, a quick response and free repairs help mitigate the risks.
