Hyundai's new engine for future N models under endurance testing
Hyundai is testing a new high-performance engine in the Elantra N1 RP at the Nürburgring 24H race, aiming for improved power and durability for future N models.
Hyundai is developing a new generation of N performance models, and the key to its future is already being tested on the track. The Elantra N1 RP prototype, featuring a new engine, has entered the 24 Hours of Nürburgring race, undergoing rigorous validation ahead of series production.
Hyundai confirmed its participation in the Nürburgring 24H race with two Elantra N1 RP cars in the SP4T class, which is designated for turbocharged engines. The RP index stands for Race Prototype, indicating a pre-production powertrain.
The company states that the engine has received increased power, improved responsiveness, and has been refined to meet modern environmental standards. The main goal of these tests is endurance, not just speed. Twenty-four hours of continuous stress help identify weaknesses and refine the unit to production-ready levels.
According to preliminary information, the new engine will feature a more robust construction, an enhanced turbocharger, and faster response without turbo lag. Hyundai aims to maintain a balance between performance and emissions requirements.
The new powertrain is expected to debut in the next-generation Elantra N, which is slated to arrive around the end of 2027. This could be a key step in strengthening Hyundai's position in the performance car segment.
Hyundai continues to advance its "from track to road" philosophy. The Elantra N1 RP testing demonstrates that the brand is betting not only on power but also on technological durability—factors that will define the competitiveness of future N models.
