Ford F-150 recall for transmission safety problem in 2015-2017 models
Ford recalls 1.4 million F-150 trucks due to unintended downshifting risks. Learn about the NHTSA investigation, causes, and free software fix for owners.
Ford has announced a recall of approximately 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks from the 2015-2017 model years in the U.S. market. The recall addresses a risk of unintended downshifting, which directly impacts safety and makes this one of the key automotive stories of 2026.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an investigation following owner complaints about unexpected gear shifts. The issue affects vehicles equipped with the 6R80 automatic transmission. According to the regulator, one incident and two potential injuries have already been reported in connection with this problem.
Ford attributes the defect to degradation of electrical connections in the transmission range sensor. Exposure to temperature fluctuations and vibrations can cause these contacts to become unstable, leading to signal distortion. In practice, this means the system may misinterpret driving conditions and initiate a sudden downshift without driver input.
Dealers will update the transmission control module software. This update is designed to compensate for the faulty signals and eliminate the risk of unexpected gear changes. All work will be performed at no cost to vehicle owners.
This situation highlights how critical electronics have become in modern vehicles. Even a relatively simple component like a sensor can trigger a massive recall and damage a brand's reputation, particularly in high-volume segments like the Ford F-150.
