Winter motorhome camping: gear, gas and safety tips

A. Krivonosov

Plan winter motorhome camping near ski areas: book early, use winter gas and reliable heating, insulate the van, fit winter tires, and stay safe in the cold.

Winter camping is gaining momentum, especially near ski slopes and cross-country trails. Many campgrounds now offer heated indoor spaces, clothes-drying facilities, and dedicated gear storage. ADAC experts advise booking early, as popular locations fill quickly—planning ahead saves frustration.

For heating, take a sufficient gas reserve—on average, 11 kilograms covers roughly two to three days. Use only winter gas, which maintains its performance in low temperatures. An electrically heated gas regulator helps prevent the system from freezing. In practice, giving yourself a margin with the gas supply makes cold snaps far less stressful.

It’s equally important that the motorhome is well insulated and equipped with dependable heating. Winter tires with at least four millimeters of tread, windshield de-icer, and a snow shovel are must-haves. If you’re selecting a vehicle for winter trips, take the time to learn how to choose the right one and to maximize safety—preparation that pays off when conditions turn challenging.
