Electric vehicle real-world range falls short in recent tests
Consumer Reports finds some EVs deliver 50-52 miles less than advertised range. Learn which models underperform and which exceed expectations.
According to a recent study by the respected organization Consumer Reports, some modern electric vehicles are delivering significantly less real-world range compared to manufacturers' official figures. Testing revealed that three specific models fell short by approximately 50-52 miles (equivalent to about 79-83 kilometers) of their advertised range.
This issue was particularly notable in the following vehicles:
— The 2025 Rivian R1S Dual Motor Max crossover;
— The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning pickup with its extended-range battery;
— The 2023 Lucid Air Touring sedan.
The discrepancy largely stems from testing methodology. Automakers determine maximum range exclusively under controlled laboratory conditions, where driving parameters are ideal. In contrast, Consumer Reports specialists conducted their testing on public roads, replicating real-world daily driving scenarios.
However, there were positive exceptions: several models actually exceeded their official specifications. Among these were the Chevrolet Silverado EV, BMW i4, and Hyundai Ioniq 5N.
