Subaru prioritizes hybrids, revises EV timeline with Toyota

Subaru refocuses its 2030 investment on hybrids, delaying new EVs while Toyota co-developed models stay on track, first battery crossover due late 2026.

Subaru has adjusted its electrification roadmap. Of the 1.5 trillion yen earmarked through 2030 (about 8.4 billion euros), the Japanese automaker will channel most of the funds into developing and producing hybrid models, reducing the share allocated to fully electric cars.

The brand had previously planned to launch eight electric vehicles, including four developed in-house, but the timeline is now being reconsidered. Joint programs with Toyota — battery-powered crossovers — remain in place, and the first of them is scheduled to arrive by the end of 2026.

Company president Atsushi Osako indicated that demand for hybrids is rising and that investments in new EVs are best postponed for now. Subaru also notes that by 2030 the funding will be allocated as part of a broader growth investment agenda. Taken together, the pivot reads as a pragmatic reshuffle of priorities amid a fluid market.

Subaru will continue to build hybrids, adapting its strategy as the market evolves. This step makes hybrids the brand’s priority among new models for 2026, while the collaboration with Toyota preserves a foothold in the EV space.
