Tesla cabin camera can estimate driver age with new update
Tesla's 2026.8.6 software update enables cabin camera to estimate driver age via facial analysis, enhancing safety and preparing for robotaxi services.
Tesla has expanded the capabilities of its cabin camera in the 2026.8.6 software update. According to findings by hacker greentheonly, the system can now estimate the driver's age through facial analysis.
Previously used for monitoring driver attentiveness, the camera above the rearview mirror now employs computer vision algorithms to classify facial features and provide approximate age assessments. Data processing occurs within the vehicle, with no information transmitted unless required in critical situations.
This functionality could restrict minors from accessing Full Self-Driving mode or even operating the vehicle. The technology is also being considered as part of preparations for a robotaxi service, where passenger monitoring would be necessary.
Tesla's monitoring system tracks gaze, head position, and driver actions. When attention is lost, warnings are issued, and if ignored, assistance systems are disabled. Additionally, a drowsiness detection feature analyzes yawning, blinking, and driving behavior.
These new capabilities enhance safety for 2026 vehicles and expand the functionality of driver assistance systems, reducing risks from distraction and fatigue behind the wheel.
