Kia recalls 381 EV5 electric crossovers in China for dashboard issues, offering OTA software updates. Learn about the safety concerns and market impact.

Kia is recalling 381 EV5 electric crossovers in China due to a dashboard malfunction. The issue affects vehicles produced between August and October 2025 and is related to the power control unit.

According to Chinese regulatory data reviewed by 32CARS journalists, incorrect signals in the system can cause information display delays. In some cases, when turn signals are activated, a green screen appears on the dashboard, which could impact driving safety. This digital interface handles key visual signals for the driver, so even brief glitches are considered critical.

Kia has already prepared a solution—a software update that will be installed via OTA. Owners will be able to receive the fix without visiting a service center. If remote updating isn't possible, vehicles will be sent to dealers for defect resolution.

The Kia EV5 is the brand's first global electric SUV, debuting specifically in China. The model launched in 2023 with a starting price of 149,800 yuan (about $21,800). However, sales remain weak: only about 572 units were sold in China throughout 2025, reflecting pressure from local manufacturers and intensifying competition.

This recall shows that even new electric vehicles face software issues. Importantly, Kia is addressing the problem via OTA—this reduces costs and speeds up fixes, but the defect itself adds pressure to a model already in a challenging market situation.
