BMW X5 M to offer electric and gasoline versions from 2028

BMW X5 M 2028: First electric and gas lineup with hybrid V8 A. Krivonosov

BMW's next X5 M will debut in 2028 with both electric and V8 gasoline versions, built on the same platform, marking a key step in the brand's electrification strategy.

BMW is preparing a significant update for its iconic crossover: the next-generation X5 M could become the first model in the brand's history where electric and gasoline versions coexist within a single lineup.

According to insiders, the fully electric X5 M will hit the market in 2028. This new version, designated G95, will be produced at a U.S. plant and will be part of BMW's broader electrification push. However, the company won't abandon traditional powertrains—a version with a classic V8 is expected to launch alongside it.

That V8 is likely the 4.4-liter twin-turbo engine already used in current BMW M models. It will probably receive hybrid assistance to meet stricter emissions regulations.

The lineup will also include a more accessible M Performance version with a detuned engine. Interestingly, both the electric and gasoline versions will be built on the same CLAR platform. This makes the X5 M a unique product, as BMW previously used separate architectures for internal combustion engines and electric vehicles. However, the future of the V8 in Europe remains uncertain.

Tightening environmental standards could limit sales of such versions, making the bet on electric vehicles increasingly apparent. Overall, the new X5 lineup will be exceptionally broad, ranging from classic gasoline and diesel versions to hybrids, electric cars, and even potential hydrogen modifications in the future.

BMW is trying to have it both ways—preserving the thrill of a V8 while simultaneously transitioning to electricity. The X5 M will serve as the perfect test of whether buyers are ready for such a compromise.
