Citroen and FIAT collaborating on new compact cars using Leapmotor platform
Citroen and FIAT are developing new compact models, including potential successors to the 2CV and Panda, using Leapmotor's platform. Expected to debut in 2026 and launch by 2028.
Citroen and FIAT are strengthening their collaboration within the Stellantis group. New compact models, including potential successors to the Citroen 2CV and FIAT Panda, could be built on a platform from the Chinese company Leapmotor.
The vehicles are expected to be co-developed as related models, similar to the existing Citroen C3 and FIAT Grande Panda. These new offerings could enter the A-segment, which Citroen previously exited after discontinuing the C1.
Concept cars might debut in October 2026 at the Paris Motor Show. Production versions could arrive by 2028, coinciding with the anniversary of the original 2CV.
Using the Leapmotor platform would cut development time by up to two years and reduce costs. Stellantis owns a 20% stake in the Chinese firm and holds rights to manufacture and distribute its vehicles through the joint venture Leapmotor International.
This move highlights a strategy to create affordable models for the mass market. Faced with rising competition and demand for new 2026 vehicles, the group is betting on partnerships and cost optimization.
