Audi is developing an electric SUV to rival Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class, leveraging Scout tech for off-road performance in 2026.

Audi is considering the development of an electric SUV that could rival the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. While the project hasn't been officially confirmed, CEO Gernot Döllner has stated that the brand can expand its lineup from compact EVs to full-size SUVs.

Industry sources report that internal discussions about a flagship 4x4 model have been ongoing for several years. This vehicle would open up a new segment for Audi and strengthen its position in the premium market. Development might leverage technologies from its Scout subsidiary, including the upcoming Traveler and Terra models. Previously, joint production in the U.S. was considered.

The interest in off-road capabilities is further highlighted by the Q6 e-tron offroad concept unveiled in 2025. This prototype features a powertrain with 380 kW (517 hp) and can tackle slopes of up to 100% thanks to portal axles. The company emphasizes that such models serve as technology flagships, allowing new innovations to trickle down into mass-market vehicles.

The emergence of this project reflects broader trends shaping top-tier SUVs in 2026, where electric technology and enhanced off-road performance play pivotal roles.
