Lexus unveils interactive manual drive, simulating a manual gearbox in the electric RZ F Sport. Experience gear shifts and engine sounds in an EV.

Lexus has unveiled a new technology called Interactive Manual Drive, which simulates the operation of a manual gearbox in an electric vehicle. The first model to feature this system is the electric RZ crossover in its F Sport variant.

The development allows drivers to replicate the sensation of shifting gears using paddle shifters. The system creates a virtual eight-speed transmission that responds to vehicle speed and accelerator pedal position. The sound also changes, mimicking the noise of an internal combustion engine.

Activation occurs via the M mode on the center console. The driver has access to visual cues on the digital instrument panel, including a tachometer and shift recommendations. The electronic control unit calculates power and torque based on the driver's inputs.

In practice, this means Lexus is focusing on driver engagement by adding familiar elements of classic driving to an electric model. The vehicle also features steer-by-wire technology, which eliminates mechanical steering linkage and uses a yoke-style steering wheel similar to those in aviation. Overall, this innovation demonstrates the manufacturer's attempts to make electric cars more emotionally engaging to drive.
