Rivian R2 features new Qi2 wireless charging system
Rivian introduces Qi2 wireless charging in the R2 electric crossover, offering magnetic alignment for stable, efficient charging up to 15W. Learn about improvements over previous models.
Rivian has introduced a new wireless smartphone charging system in its R2 electric crossover. The model is the first in the brand's lineup to support the Qi2 standard with magnetic alignment, similar to Apple's MagSafe technology.
Wireless chargers have been installed in cars for over a decade, but many drivers have complained about their inconsistent performance. Issues often arose from improper phone placement, leading to slow charging or complete stoppage.
This problem was particularly noticeable in Rivian R1 vehicles. Owners repeatedly reported that the built-in chargers failed to perform their task. Despite using a complex design with dozens of coils, charging remained unstable, and many owners switched to third-party solutions.

In the new Rivian R2, the company has addressed this issue by implementing the Qi2 standard. This technology relies on a magnetic positioning system that automatically aligns the smartphone and charger coils. This improves energy transfer efficiency and allows charging devices with up to 15W power.
Additionally, the magnetic mount keeps the smartphone in place during movement, which is especially important during sharp turns. It also reduces device heating, positively affecting charging stability.
Deliveries of the Rivian R2 electric crossover are expected to begin on May 4, 2026. Meanwhile, the company has already removed the previous generation of wireless chargers from its online store, which may indicate the imminent release of updated modules for existing Rivian R1 models.
