Volkswagen continues preparing for the debut of its new electric hatchback, the ID.Polo. Prototypes were recently spotted during winter testing in northern Sweden. Photographers managed to capture several variants of the car, including the sporty GTI version and the more stylish R-Line trim.

In size, the new ID.Polo is similar to the classic gasoline-powered Polo. However, the electric version features several modern design elements, including hidden rear door handles and traditional front handles. The front of the body is still partially camouflaged, but it's already known that the model will get an LED light strip connecting the headlights, with a similar element at the rear.

The R-Line version will mainly differ in its exterior styling. It will include larger wheels, sporty bumpers, and more dynamic design elements, though its technical specifications will remain the same as the standard versions. The more interesting variant appears to be the ID.Polo GTI, which gets its own wheels, red brake calipers, and a front bumper with a characteristic mesh grille reminiscent of the Golf GTI.

The new hatchback is built on the updated MEB+ platform. Its powertrain is based on the APP290 permanent magnet electric motor. In the European market, the model will be offered in four power variants. Base versions will produce 114 and 133 horsepower. The R-Line version will get 208 hp, while the top-tier ID.Polo GTI will deliver around 223 hp.

The base version will feature an LFP battery with a capacity of 37 kWh, supporting fast charging up to 90 kW. More powerful versions will get a 52 kWh NMC cell battery with fast charging capability up to 130 kW.

The official premiere of the Volkswagen ID.Polo is expected in the coming months. This model is set to become one of the brand's key new offerings in Europe's compact electric vehicle segment.
