General Motors will bring back the Chevrolet Bolt EV in 2027 with improvements, but production is limited to about 18 months due to plant capacity and strategy.

General Motors will reintroduce the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle to its lineup in 2027. The updated version will feature several improvements over the first generation, but production will be limited to about 18 months.

The new Bolt is set to be manufactured at the Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas. The facility will produce the electric vehicle only until mid-2027, after which it will begin transitioning to building the gasoline-powered Chevrolet Equinox crossover.

Later, the same site is also planned to launch a new-generation compact Buick crossover. Due to these programs, production capacity for the electric vehicle will be constrained, which explains the short production run for the Bolt.

Trade policy has influenced the company's decision as well. Moving production of popular crossovers to Kansas is tied to new import tariffs in the United States. Building these models domestically will allow GM to increase its share of local production.

Demand is another key factor. The original Bolt established its own customer base, and the company anticipates that many owners of the first version will want to upgrade to the new generation. Overall, the limited production timeline is driven by plant capacity, localization strategy, and demand forecasts.
