Toyota has unveiled the updated GR Yaris sports hatchback, now called the Type 26. This new variant incorporates several technical refinements, drawing directly from the model's motorsport experience.
A key upgrade is the new GR steering wheel, co-developed with professional drivers. It features a smaller diameter and optimized grip shape, enhancing control during spirited driving and on the track. The wheel's buttons have been redesigned too—they're now separate and backlit for better visibility.

Toyota's engineers have also tweaked the electric power steering settings. With a revised torsion beam stiffness and new software, the system responds more precisely under high loads during aggressive braking and cornering.
For the RZ High Performance version, there are new Bridgestone Potenza Race tires in size 225/40 R18. These were developed specifically for the GR Yaris, offering more consistent grip both on track and regular roads. The suspension damping characteristics have been optimized to match these new tires.

The GR Yaris Type 26 retains the 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine, producing 304 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. It pairs with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission, and features the GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system with three torque distribution modes.
In terms of dimensions, the car remains compact: it's 3,995 mm long and weighs around 1,280 kg. This blend of lightweight construction and all-wheel drive is what makes the GR Yaris stand out as one of the most distinctive hot hatches available.
Sales of the updated model will begin in Japan on April 6. Pricing ranges from approximately 3.6 to 5.8 million yen, depending on the configuration.
