Ford CEO Jim Farley explains the Puma crossover is too expensive and small for U.S. buyers, citing lessons from the Ford Flex. Learn why it stays in Europe.

Ford CEO Jim Farley has stated that the company is not considering bringing the compact Puma crossover to the U.S. market. In an interview with Car and Driver, he explained that the model might be too expensive and too small for North American buyers.

Farley pointed to the risk of repeating what happened with the Ford Flex, which had loyal owners but insufficient sales volumes. This is notable because back in 2021, the Ford CEO had suggested the Puma might come to North America.

Currently, the Puma enjoys steady demand in Europe and the UK. In the UK, the crossover led passenger car sales rankings in 2023, 2024, and 2025, and was among the ten best-selling models in Europe last year.

In the U.S. market, Ford does not offer subcompact models. In the affordable segment, the brand only has the Maverick and Bronco Sport. For comparison, General Motors offers four subcompact models.

Overall, despite its success in Europe, Ford currently has no plans to expand the Puma's sales geography, focusing instead on other products for the American market.
