Škoda's new battery workshop enhances electric vehicle manufacturing
Škoda invests 205 million euros in a battery assembly facility producing over 1,100 units daily, using LFP technology for cheaper, eco-friendly EVs.
Škoda has officially opened a new battery system assembly workshop at its main plant in Mladá Boleslav. The company invested 205 million euros in the project, making it the largest electric vehicle battery producer within the Volkswagen Group.
The new facility covers 55,000 square meters and can produce over 1,100 batteries daily, or up to 335,000 units annually. In practice, a finished battery rolls off the assembly line approximately every 60 seconds. Production is automated using 131 industrial robots. A key element is the cell-to-pack technology, which integrates cells directly into the battery pack without intermediate modules. This reduces weight, simplifies assembly, and lowers costs.
According to Škoda, the new batteries are 30% cheaper than current MEB solutions due to standardized cells and a shift to lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry. LFP batteries contain no cobalt or nickel, making them more affordable, environmentally friendly, and resistant to overheating. In the future, such batteries will be used in new models on the MEB+ platform, including the compact Škoda Epiq crossover.
This move is strategically important for Škoda, as controlling battery production is a foundation for competitive vehicles in the coming years. Reducing costs and focusing on LFP technology could significantly strengthen the brand's position in the mass-market electric vehicle segment.
