Land Rover Freelander returns as a new sub-brand
Land Rover is bringing back the Freelander name as a standalone sub-brand in China, built on the Chery T1X platform with electric and EREV options.
Land Rover is preparing to bring back the Freelander name, but the approach is unexpected. Rather than creating a direct successor to the classic model, the project is being developed through the Chery Jaguar Land Rover joint venture. This means the new lineup will be built on the Chinese T1X platform, which underpins crossovers from Chery, Jaecoo, and Omoda. This strategy cuts development costs and speeds up market entry.
Freelander will become a standalone sub-brand, not just a single model. The first vehicle is already undergoing road testing in China. The design retains familiar ruggedness: a boxy silhouette, narrow front lighting, black grilles, and a pronounced hood. The side profile echoes the Defender, featuring a contrasting roof and door styling. The angular C-pillars are body-colored, reminiscent of the original Freelander.
The rear end looks sportier—compact taillights are positioned low, which may spark debate among brand enthusiasts. The production version could adopt a more traditional rear lighting layout.
Technical specifications are unconfirmed, but two variants are expected: a fully electric model and an EREV with extended range. Production will take place at the CJLR plant in Changshu.
This revival of Freelander reflects JLR's strategy to expand its model lines in China while reducing costs and accelerating development, all while maintaining a visual connection to the brand's heritage.
