Consumer Reports shows hybrids have 15% fewer problems than gas cars and 80% fewer than EVs. Learn which models and warranties lead in reliability.

Hybrid vehicles have proven more reliable than electric cars and plug-in hybrids, according to a recent Consumer Reports analysis of 2023–2025 model years. The study found hybrids average 15% fewer problems than gasoline vehicles, while electric and plug-in hybrid owners reported 80% more issues than average.

In practice, this matters because reliability directly impacts ownership costs. Toyota, Lexus, and Honda hybrids earned the highest reliability scores, with only the Hyundai Sonata and Lincoln Nautilus hybrids falling below average.

Among pickups and crossovers, the Ford F-150 Hybrid, Kia Carnival Hybrid, and Subaru Forester Hybrid received positive ratings. Experts note hybrid technology has been in use longer, allowing manufacturers to work out most early-stage issues.

For warranty coverage, Hyundai and Kia lead with 5 years or 60,000 miles on the vehicle and up to 10 years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain. Toyota and Lexus offer up to 10 years or 150,000 miles on hybrid batteries.

Overall, the picture is straightforward: hybrids deliver proven reliability. In Consumer Reports' 2026 best cars list, the Honda Civic Hybrid and fully hybrid Toyota Camry scored highly, while the Lexus NX and Toyota Grand Highlander were named segment leaders, both available with hybrid powertrains.
