Why minor car accidents now cost thousands in repairs

Learn about rising repair costs for modern cars due to technology like sensors and cameras. ADAC study shows bills from €1,000 to €8,000 for minor damages.

Minor accidents involving modern cars are increasingly resulting in repair bills running into thousands of euros. This is the conclusion of an ADAC study that analyzed 21 models across three typical scenarios: a front-left parking impact, a rear-right impact, and windshield replacement.

Replacing a windshield, which used to cost a few hundred euros, now almost always exceeds a thousand. The reason is the need to remove and then recalibrate the cameras for driver assistance systems. The most expensive was the VW Golf, at over €2,400. Only the electric MG4 came in under €1,000. Interestingly, there was a price difference of over €200 for the windshield between the structurally identical Suzuki Swace and Toyota Corolla.

Front-end damage requiring a new headlight and bumper is even more costly. Repairing a Fiat 500 costs around €3,000, while a BMW 330e comes in at nearly €8,000. This high figure for the BMW is largely due to its laser headlights, which cost about €3,300 each before labor. For a Volvo XC60, the total bill approaches €6,000.

In a rear bumper damage scenario, the Tesla Model Y showed a relatively low result of around €2,800, as it doesn't use additional sensors in the rear. For VW models, a significant part of the cost comes from replacing two control units at €674 each, even if only one is damaged.

ADAC points out that manufacturers often prohibit bumper repairs, mandating complete replacement instead. This drives up costs and impacts insurance premiums. For owners of used cars, these sums represent a serious financial risk.

Experts advise that after an accident, it's wise to request multiple quotes and compare offers. The final price can vary significantly based on the labor rates charged by different service centers.
