BMW recalls 87,394 vehicles in the U.S. due to engine starter overheating, which may cause fire risk. Dealers will replace starters for free.

BMW North America has announced a recall of 87,394 vehicles in the United States due to a potential issue with the engine starter overheating, which could pose a fire risk.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published details of the recall campaign on February 7. According to the regulator, the starter in some vehicles may overheat during use, and under unfavorable conditions, this could lead to a fire.

To address the defect, BMW dealerships in the U.S. will replace the starters on all affected vehicles at no cost. The regulator emphasizes that owners will not incur any expenses, and the procedure will be carried out as part of a standard service campaign.

This recall highlights the heightened scrutiny by American oversight agencies on vehicle technical safety. For BMW, the campaign requires swift servicing of tens of thousands of cars in a key market, though the company has not reported any injuries or incidents related to the identified defect.
