GM explains why the Allison badge is back on Silverado and Sierra HD pickups, despite the 10-speed transmission being built by GM with Allison's validation for durability.

General Motors has clarified why the Allison badge is returning on Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickups, even though the 10-speed automatic transmission is manufactured by GM itself. This transmission, the 10L1000, is built at GM facilities and isn't a fully "classic" Allison gearbox.

The confusion stems from GM's medium-duty commercial trucks—the Silverado 4500 HD, 5500 HD, and 6500 HD—which use genuine six-speed automatic transmissions developed and produced by Allison Transmission. The situation is different for the heavy-duty HD pickups.

GM emphasized that the Allison branding isn't just for marketing. According to company representatives, Allison participated in validation and durability testing of the 10L1000 transmission during development. Production and final tuning remain with GM, but Allison's expertise helped confirm the unit's reliability.

Using the well-known brand reflects its reputation in the heavy-duty vehicle segment and underscores a focus on endurance and towing capability. For buyers, including those considering these pickups for small business use, the Allison badge remains an indicator of durability and readiness for high loads.
