Kia is road testing the PV5 electric van in the U.S., featuring modular design, up to 249 miles range, and fast charging. Could it fill a niche for small businesses?

Kia has begun road testing its PV5 electric van in the United States. This vehicle is the production model of the company's new PBV (Platform Beyond Vehicle) lineup. A prototype was spotted in Michigan, featuring elements like front and rear side marker lights that comply with U.S. regulations. This suggests the company is verifying compliance, though an official U.S. launch for the model has not yet been confirmed.

Built on the E-GMP.S platform, the Kia PV5 utilizes a modular architecture that allows for quick changes to the upper body. This design enables the vehicle to be adapted for various purposes, from passenger transport to cargo duty. In terms of size, the PV5 is more compact than the long-wheelbase Volkswagen ID. Buzz. However, thanks to its flat floor and short overhangs, it offers efficient use of interior space.

The van is equipped with a front electric motor producing 163 horsepower and offers two battery options: 51.5 kWh or 71.2 kWh. The larger battery version provides a driving range of up to 249 miles. Features also include fast-charging capability, V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality, and over-the-air updates.

Kia has already confirmed sales of the PV5 in Korea and Europe. Testing in the U.S. does not guarantee a market launch there, but it keeps the possibility open. If introduced, the PV5 could fill a niche for small businesses, an area currently lacking versatile electric solutions.
