Ford could bring back sedans to the US, leveraging the updated Mondeo from China. Learn about platform, design changes, and market challenges.

Ford may reconsider its decision to abandon sedans in the U.S. market. The updated Ford Mondeo, which sells in China and received a facelift in late 2025, has sparked new discussions. Ford CEO Jim Farley previously stated that the company does not rule out a return to sedans if such a move proves economically justified.

The Mondeo remains on sale in China, while in Middle Eastern markets, the same model is known as the Taurus. The current version is built on a platform shared with the Bronco Sport, Maverick, and several Lincoln models. This car is larger than its predecessor and is not directly related technically to the previous Fusion.

The update involved the front-end design, rear lighting, wheel designs, and interior. Inside, the dashboard has been redesigned, the multimedia system modernized, and the three-screen configuration retained. The powertrain lineup remains unchanged: a 188-horsepower 1.5-liter EcoBoost gasoline engine, a 205-horsepower hybrid, and a 251-horsepower 2.0-liter EcoBoost.

A potential return of a Ford sedan to the U.S. is complicated by the dominance of the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, as well as high tariffs on vehicles made in China. However, the existing platform and model update boost the Mondeo's chances as a candidate in the new car segment for 2026, if Ford decides to localize production for the North American market.
