BYD to launch Seal 08 sedan and Sea Lion 08 SUV in 2026
BYD unveils the Seal 08 sedan and Sea Lion 08 SUV, part of the Ocean 8 Series, featuring rear-wheel steering for better maneuverability. Launch expected in early 2026.
Chinese automotive giant BYD is preparing to launch two new flagship models—the Seal 08 sedan and the Sea Lion 08 SUV, both part of the Ocean 8 Series. Uncamouflaged photos of the vehicles surfaced online on January 31, revealing their final exterior design and confirming that both will feature rear-wheel steering. This technology is designed to reduce turning radius and improve maneuverability.
The Seal 08 is positioned as a mid-to-large-size fastback sports sedan, while the Sea Lion 08 is a full-size crossover with a rugged, off-road-inspired aesthetic. Officially, both models are slated for release in the first quarter of 2026, though detailed specifications have not yet been disclosed.
This "dual flagship" Ocean 8 Series was initially announced at the Ocean Day event in December 2025, which marked the fourth anniversary of the Ocean lineup. This series within BYD's product portfolio focuses on more technologically advanced, stylish, and eco-friendly vehicles.
In a separate move, BYD also announced in January the upcoming launch of new 9th-series models in its Dynasty lineup—the Tang and Han. The new Tang 9 is expected to be named "Datang" (Great Tang). The inclusion of rear-wheel steering in BYD's models signals the brand's ambition to compete with premium European automakers. If the final specs deliver as promised, the Sea Lion 08 and Seal 08 could become hits beyond China.
