GM confirms new V8 engines production in Canada for full-size vehicles
General Motors will manufacture its Gen 6 Small Block V8 engines in Ontario for full-size pickups and SUVs, with investments in Canadian facilities.
General Motors has confirmed that its next-generation V8 engines will be manufactured in Canada. Production of the Gen 6 Small Block engines will be established at the St. Catharines Propulsion plant in Ontario. This facility already produces the current-generation V8 Gen 5, including the 5.3-liter L84 and 6.2-liter L87 engines.
According to the company, the new V8s are intended for GM's full-size pickups and SUVs. At the same time, GM Canada announced a series of changes to its production structure. The Oshawa Assembly plant will return to two-shift operations starting February 2, which will temporarily affect approximately 500 employees. GM stated it is working with the Unifor union to support these workers.
The company also emphasized that Oshawa Assembly remains a key facility in its full-size truck strategy. A $280 million investment has been allocated to prepare for the production of the next generation of full-size internal combustion engine pickups. Over the past five years, GM has invested more than $2.6 billion in its Canadian manufacturing operations. Oshawa is the only site in North America where both light-duty and heavy-duty versions of the Chevrolet Silverado are assembled on the same line.
Industry sources indicate that the new Gen 6 Small Block engines may come in several displacements, including 5.7 and 6.7 liters, and will replace the Gen 5 lineup.
