GM plans new hybrids but keeps focus on EVs and traditional cars
General Motors CEO Mary Barra discusses hybrid plans as a secondary focus to EVs and ICE vehicles, with new plug-in hybrids expected by 2027.
General Motors CEO Mary Barra revealed in an interview with Bloomberg that the company is preparing "several hybrids," but emphasized this will remain a secondary focus compared to its internal combustion engine and fully electric vehicle lineups. Barra explained that GM is betting on what she calls the "end goal"—affordable EVs built on a dedicated EV platform. At the same time, the automaker plans to maintain what she described as the "right ICE portfolio" and continue developing traditional models alongside electric cars. Barra pointed to market results as validation of this strategy, noting that GM has been gaining market share for four consecutive years.
Currently, GM effectively offers only one hybrid in the U.S.: the Corvette E-Ray, which pairs a V8 engine with an electric motor on the front axle. The company previously played a significant role in advancing hybrid technology, with projects like the Chevrolet Volt and hybrid versions of larger models. In 2024, GM announced the return of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) to North America, a move driven by tightening fuel efficiency and emissions regulations. Earlier statements from GM indicated that new PHEVs are targeted for launch by 2027, though specific models have not yet been named. These projects could pave the way for more budget-friendly hybrids in the brand's lineup.
