BMW accelerates iX3 production at its Hungary plant to handle strong orders, attracting new buyers and outpacing gasoline X3 sales in Germany.

BMW is ramping up production of the second-generation iX3 in response to strong demand. According to Der Spiegel, citing company sources, orders for the electric crossover remain very high from both private customers and corporate fleets. To handle the influx of requests, BMW plans to accelerate production growth at its new plant in Debrecen, Hungary.

The factory could potentially switch to three-shift operations ahead of schedule. At full capacity, the facility is capable of producing up to 150,000 vehicles annually. Notably, a significant portion of buyers are new to the brand, with reports suggesting that one in every three iX3 orders comes from customers who previously did not own a BMW.

The model debuted in September at IAA Mobility in Munich, and within a month, it had surpassed the gasoline-powered X3 in order numbers in Germany. In November, BMW CEO Oliver Zipse described the project's launch as exceptionally positive, and by December, according to BMW Italy CEO Massimiliano Di Silvestre, the iX3 was nearly sold out in Europe.

First test drives of the BMW iX3 in Europe are expected from early March, with sales in the U.S. starting in summer. A version with an extended wheelbase will be introduced in China later.
