Toyota confirmed a twin-turbo V8 hybrid for a GR supercar debuting Dec 2025, with Lexus versions planned—reinforcing performance focus amid EV pressure.

At the Japan Mobility Show 2025, Toyota’s powertrain chief Takashi Uehara confirmed that a new twin-turbo V8 is in development. This engine will serve as the heart of an upcoming GR-badged supercar scheduled to be unveiled in December 2025.

The V8 is linked to Toyota’s modular gasoline engine family, which also includes 1.5- and 2.0-liter units. Uehara noted that the setup will deliver substantially more power than the four-cylinder used in the GR Yaris M concept—exactly the kind of escalation fans expect from a flagship.

The eight-cylinder will be integrated into a hybrid powertrain without plug-in capability. The same engine is set to be adapted for Lexus models as well, including the future production version of the Lexus Sport concept.

Altogether, the move signals Toyota’s determination to keep its performance identity intact and reinforce its place in the sports-car arena, even as pressure from electric vehicles intensifies.
