Leapmotor and Stellantis collaborate on REx technology for European EVs

Leapmotor and Stellantis deepen tech ties for REx powertrains in Europe A. Krivonosov

Leapmotor and Stellantis expand partnership, potentially bringing REx powertrains to European brands like Vauxhall and Peugeot to boost EV range and reduce emissions.

Chinese automaker Leapmotor and Stellantis are deepening their technological collaboration, with European brands under the Stellantis umbrella—Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, DS, and Fiat—potentially gaining access to REx powertrains. This system uses a small gasoline engine as a generator to extend driving range and reduce dependence on charging infrastructure. Leapmotor claims its C10 model equipped with REx can travel up to 950 km while emitting just 10 g/km of CO2.

Leapmotor's international division CEO, Tianshu Xing, notes that Stellantis views REx as a temporary but important solution for Europe, where electric vehicle sales are growing slower than forecast. Reverse integration is also under discussion: future Leapmotor models may transition to CMP and STLA platforms, which would simplify production localization.

The first steps are already planned: the Leapmotor B10 will roll off the assembly line in Spain alongside the Corsa and 208, and potential component sharing will form part of the broader corporate strategy to reduce costs and expand product synergies.
