BYD's Racco kei EV may reach Europe if the EU creates an E-Car category; 20-kWh battery, up to 180 km range, 100 kW fast charging. Rival to Dacia Spring.
BYD is weighing a European debut for its new kei car, the Racco, provided the European Commission introduces an E-Car category for low-cost compact models. Shown at the Tokyo motor show and intended primarily for Japan, the Racco meets local kei-car dimensions: 3.4 meters long, 1.475 meters wide and 1.8 meters tall. It uses a 20‑kWh battery for up to 180 kilometers of range and supports fast charging at up to 100 kW. On paper, that package looks purpose-built for tight city streets.
BYD vice president Stella Li said the company would closely monitor EU regulations. If the new class materializes, the Racco could take the role of an entry model below the Dolphin Surf and compete with the Dacia Spring and Leapmotor T03. That would position it neatly without treading on the toes of existing models.
The E-Car category is being developed to cut the cost of producing small EVs, which have become less affordable as safety and technology demands have increased. Even so, BYD emphasizes that bringing the Racco to Europe is not a priority right now: the company is concentrating on broadening its hybrid range. For the market, that means the Racco’s European prospects depend first on regulation, then on timing.
