Toyota issues global recall over instrument cluster software failure
Toyota recalls 2M vehicles over software fault blacking out the instrument cluster. Lexus and Suzuki affected. Dealers to update software or replace modules.
Toyota has announced a global recall of around two million vehicles due to a critical software fault that can completely shut down the instrument cluster. While driving, motorists may suddenly lose the speedometer, warnings, and indicator lights — a serious safety risk.
According to reporting by 32CARS.RU, the recall covers the GR Yaris, Highlander, Corolla, Camry, RAV4, C-HR, and other models built from February 2022 to May 2025. A similar defect was identified in the Lexus LBX, LM, and LS — nearly 902,000 vehicles in total. Suzuki is also recalling 8,000 units of the Across and Swace.
The issue stems from a memory overflow in a control unit, which can cause the instrument panel to go dark without warning. Dealers will install a software update or replace the module; in some cases, a full cluster replacement will be required.
The process is overseen by Germany’s KBA. Recalls of this kind are routine in Russia and Europe, yet the scale here highlights how vital a robust electronic architecture has become as vehicles grow more complex. A blank dashboard turns abstract code into a very tangible hazard, reminding the industry that dependability today rests as much on software discipline as on hardware.
