Why Nissan's new Patrol won't get a diesel engine

Nissan confirms no diesel for the new Patrol SUV, citing weak demand, lack of compliant engines, and a shift toward hybrid and electric tech in key markets.

Nissan will not introduce a diesel version of its popular Patrol SUV, considering that path outdated as demand for diesel declines and hybrid and electric technologies gain momentum.

This decision comes despite steady interest in diesel Patrol Y63 models in Australia, especially among buyers working in agriculture and those living in remote regions.

Even so, the Patrol’s core markets are the Middle East and North America, where customers have long favored gasoline engines—an important reality that clearly influences the model’s direction.

The company also explained that it currently lacks suitable modern, high-performance diesel engines that meet today’s efficiency and emissions standards, which is why it is stepping away from diesel variants.

Representatives of the Japanese brand said the move reflects customer preferences and aligns with current market trends. From a product standpoint, it reads as a pragmatic pivot rather than a sentimental one.
