Mercedes-AMG names new CEO as Euro 7 V8 and GT XX–inspired EVs advance

Mercedes-AMG appoints Stefan Weckbach as CEO and maps a reset: Euro 7-ready V8 plus GT XX–inspired electric halo models, balancing performance with luxury.

Despite a bumpy run for Mercedes-AMG in recent years—the C 63’s contentious switch to a four-cylinder, talk of discounts, and the AMG One recall over fire risk—the brand is preparing a reset that spans both its lineup and the people steering it.

The headline change is leadership. Stefan Weckbach, who previously led the Porsche Taycan program, has been appointed CEO of Mercedes-AMG. He will take office on July 1, 2026, and will also head the Top End Vehicle Group, which includes the G-Class and Maybach. The current AMG chief, Michael Schiebe, has already moved up to the Mercedes-Benz board and, from December 1, 2025, is responsible for production, quality, and supply chains. Given those résumés, expectations naturally tilt toward a tighter blend of high performance and top-tier luxury.

Alongside the reshuffle, AMG signaled that more emotionally charged debuts are coming: a new V8 developed with Euro 7 in mind and, in parallel, potent electric models inspired by the GT XX concept, which is expected to evolve into a production electric super-sedan and a related SUV. Judging by the official tone and the trajectory of emissions rules, a return of a road car with an F1-derived engine doesn’t look likely—the era appears to be closing. The strategy feels pragmatic: keep the character of a V8 where it still fits, while pressing ahead with halo EVs.
