Over the next three years, the SUV field is headed for a major refresh—automakers are lining up several pivotal models, each with the potential to reshuffle the class.

Among them is the next-generation Toyota RAV4 hybrid. In PHEV guise it targets 324 hp and up to 84 km of electric-only range, while the GR Sport version brings a retuned suspension and a sharper demeanor. That mix should keep the RAV4 firmly in the hunt, pairing efficiency with a bit more attitude.

The all-electric Jeep Recon promises serious off-road credentials: removable doors, Snow and Sand drive modes, 650 hp, and a 0–97 km/h sprint in 3.6 seconds. Still, a high price and modest range could temper demand. On paper it’s a trail tool with sports-car thrust; in practice, buyers will watch the window sticker and the range meter just as closely.

By 2027, a new Kia Telluride is due with a turbo engine, a 329-hp hybrid, a cabin offering massage seats, and improved capability for the X-Pro variant. If executed cleanly, that blend of powertrains and comfort should reinforce the Telluride’s family appeal while giving the X-Pro more bite.

Genesis’s performance arm is preparing the GV60 Magma—an electric crossover with 640 hp and a 3.4-second burst of acceleration. It’s a decisive move toward the territory dominated by AMG and M, exactly the kind of statement piece the brand has been missing.

Rivian, meanwhile, will add the compact R3X, leaning into retro style, low mass, and three motors. A lighter, smaller package plays to the brand’s adventurous identity while widening its reach.

And in 2028, the Scout Traveler will debut—reviving a storied name under Volkswagen. A body-on-frame layout and a range-extender version are already sparking interest, with a starting price expected below $60,000. If that pricing holds, it could be the tipping point that brings the badge back into the mainstream.
