Opel Eyes a Return to City Cars With an EV Priced Below €15,000

Opel Plans City EV Priced Below €15,000, Cheaper Than a Lada Vesta A. Krivonosov

Opel is set to join Stellantis' new E-Car family with a compact electric city car targeting a price around €15,000, ahead of a planned 2028 launch.

A price of around €15,000 — roughly $17,500 at current exchange rates — looks far more attractive than most European EVs on sale today. But for now this is only a target price for Opel’s future city car, not a finished price list. The eventual cost for buyers outside Europe would likely be considerably higher once shipping, registration and import duties are added.

According to the automaker, Opel will join the E-Car family alongside future compact models from Citroen and FIAT. The launch is expected in 2028, with production likely set up at the Pomigliano d'Arco plant in Italy. The car would mark Opel’s return to segment A, which the brand left after ending production of the Karl and Adam.

Stellantis itself has only officially confirmed the broader program: starting in 2028, the Pomigliano plant will begin producing small, affordable electric cars for several of the group’s brands. The company’s statement did not mention Opel, the €15,000 price, model names or technical specifications, so these details should still be treated as preliminary, according to 32CARS.RU.

Reports about a shared platform or components from Leapmotor also remain unconfirmed. Such sharing could help lower production costs, but buyers will care far more about the eventual battery capacity, real-world range, fast-charging power and the list of safety systems.

At a price below €15,000, this Opel shouldn’t be expected to match the range or equipment of the pricier Corsa Electric. Its role would be short daily trips and charging at home. A real verdict on the car will only be possible once Opel publishes usable battery capacity, winter range and warranty terms.
