BMW explores range-extender EV tech for X5 and 7 Series amid China demand
BMW is exploring range-extender EVs for the X5 and 7 Series, using a compact engine-generator to boost range. China's surging EREV market is shaping strategy.
According to Bloomberg, BMW is exploring electric vehicles with longer range by using a compact engine-generator. The X5 and 7 Series are under consideration, with packaging that would allow a small combustion engine to serve solely as a source of electricity without driving the wheels. On paper, the setup looks like a neat way to stretch range while keeping the driving character purely electric.
Interest in the technology is fueled by the surge of the EREV market in China, where sales of such models rose by nearly 50 percent in the opening months of 2025. China remains a crucial market for BMW, accounting for more than a quarter of the brand’s global deliveries. The segment is gaining momentum thanks to models such as the BYD Yangwang U8, Aito M9, and Li Auto L9. That kind of growth naturally sharpens focus on range-extender solutions.
Sources say BMW already has the necessary components—compact engines and transmissions—which could help trim development costs. In parallel, the company is assessing customer needs and the technology’s potential, without confirming any program launch. The cautious pacing feels deliberate, a sensible way to test appetite before committing.
