Eindhoven students unveil ARIA, a modular electric car with six removable battery packs and swappable parts to extend lifespan and make maintenance easier.

Students at Eindhoven University of Technology, working with Fontys and Summa, have unveiled ARIA, a prototype electric car. The model follows a modular philosophy: key components can be swapped by hand thanks to standardized assemblies, clear step-by-step guidance, and an integrated tool kit. The car is powered by six small battery packs that can be removed and reinstalled without any special equipment. In a market full of sealed systems, this hands-on approach feels refreshingly practical.

The developers say this concept is designed to extend the vehicle’s lifespan and prevent scrapping an otherwise sound car over a few defective parts. ARIA is already capable of driving, though the timeline for mass production has not been set. If the idea reaches the assembly line, this kind of modularity could make everyday maintenance less intimidating and keep ownership pleasantly straightforward.
