Ferrari 12Cilindri GTO: prototype in unusual test bodywork hints at a sharper V12

Ferrari has rekindled interest in the future of its V12 models. A peculiar prototype based on the 12Cilindri has been spotted during testing, and it might well be an early version of a more extreme 12Cilindri GTO. For now this is speculation built around spy shots, not an official announcement.
There is a reason for the theory. Earlier reports revealed that the Italians filed a batch of new trademark applications, and 12Cilindri GTO is among them. Registering a name does not guarantee a production car, but it does give the brand the right to use it should the project make it to the line. The same logic has played out before with limited and more radical versions: the last car to wear the coveted badge was the 599 GTO.
The standard Ferrari 12Cilindri is itself a rare creature on today’s market: a front-engined coupe with a naturally aspirated V12, rear-wheel drive and a two-seat cabin. The engine delivers 819 hp and revs to 9,500 rpm — numbers that are almost indecent for a production car in the 2020s. Ferrari itself frames the model as a successor to the classic grand tourers of the 1950s and 1960s: not a track special, but a fast and expensive GT.
If a GTO version really does arrive, expect lower weight, more aggressive aerodynamics, a different chassis setup and possibly a power bump. There is no firm information on the engine, production run, price or debut timing — but a name of this calibre rarely stays on the trademark register for long.
