Android Auto Connection Fix: Google Ships the Patch Through Play Services, Not the App Itself

Google has finally patched the Android Auto connection bug — but the fix ships with Google Play Services 26.22, not the Android Auto app itself.
Google has rolled out a fix for the Android Auto connection problems that left some drivers stuck with failed launches and dropped sessions. The twist: the patch didn’t arrive through the Android Auto app itself, but bundled with Google Play Services version 26.22.
In the update notes, Google flagged fixes for Device Connections services tied to Android Auto. That detail matters: when the car loses its link, the interface freezes, or the phone simply refuses to see the head unit, Android Auto isn’t always the one to blame. Google Play Services, the Google app and other system components handling the assistant, the connection and data exchange all play a role.
So just installing the latest Android Auto build may not be enough. Drivers should open Google Play and update every Google app tied to the in-car experience. Pixel owners in particular should pay attention: after the March 2026 update, a chunk of those phones started running into Android Auto launch failures and frequent disconnects.
Google is now sweeping up the smaller bugs ahead of a major Android Auto update expected later this year. It’s set to bring weather and calendar widgets, better use of non-standard screen layouts and YouTube access while parked. Video will require a stationary car, and background YouTube audio will be tied to Premium.
Sometimes the most useful update for your car isn’t in the car, and isn’t even in Android Auto — it’s in a system service drivers usually never think about.
