Porsche Marks 50 Years of Transaxle Sports Cars with Rotating Exhibits
Porsche celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Transaxle sports cars (924, 928, 944, 968) with pop-up installations at the Porsche Museum and select venues. Discover the history and event schedule.
Porsche has announced a thematic year titled “Forever Young. Celebrating Transaxle” to mark the 50th anniversary of its Transaxle sports cars. The program, organized by the Porsche Heritage and Museum team, won’t be a single large exhibition but rather a series of rotating pop-up installations at the Porsche Museum and select venues outside Zuffenhausen.
This design era spans from 1976 to 1995, during which Porsche built nearly 400,000 cars across four Transaxle lines: the 924, 928, 944, and 968. In these models, the engine sits up front while the transmission is mounted at the rear axle, connected by a rigid tube housing the driveshaft. This layout helps achieve a more balanced weight distribution and precise handling.
The first model was the Porsche 924, which evolved from the EA 425 project. It was followed by the 928, a more comfortable grand tourer with a V8 engine. During the 1980s, the 944 became the family’s mainstay, and the line culminated with the 968, produced from 1991 to 1995. The 968 featured a 3.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 240 hp and 305 Nm of torque.
The initial display at the Porsche Museum runs until June 7, 2026. Separate shows for the 944 and 968 will follow from August 25 to October 4, 2026, and a 928 showcase will run from November 24, 2026, to January 17, 2027. The first “Transaxle Meet – Spring Edition” weekend is scheduled for May 23–24, 2026.
