Why the Jeep Wrangler has vanished from the UK—for now

Jeep halts UK Wrangler sales after GSR2 safety and ZEV mandate pressures tied to high CO2. The pause could be temporary as Jeep adapts; Avenger, Compass lead.

The Wrangler has vanished from the UK market, yet Jeep stresses this is a pause rather than a farewell. The flagship off-roader no longer meets the EU's stringent GSR2 rules that call for advanced safety systems, driver monitoring, and tougher cybersecurity. Its high CO2 figure of 269 g/km compounded the pressure under the ZEV mandate, which pushes manufacturers to bring down average emissions.

Under the new framework, every car that emits under 167 g/km effectively earns the maker one notional EV sale. By contrast, choosing not to sell a single Wrangler saves Stellantis almost 1.6 'virtual' EVs. With fines set at £12,000 for each additional combustion vehicle, Jeep had little choice but to halt deliveries.

Jeep UK boss Chris Cholmondley said production has been suspended for the entire year, though the brand is not closing the book. According to him, the Wrangler could return in an evolved form once it is adapted to the latest regulatory and environmental demands.

For now, the focus shifts to higher-volume models such as the Avenger and Compass. They retain the Jeep DNA while fitting today’s market far better. As for future electric offerings, including the Recon and Wagoneer S, UK launch timings have yet to be set.
