U.S.-based Slate Auto, backed by Jeff Bezos, is preparing to put a $28,000 electric pickup into production, aiming to make it one of the most affordable options on the market. Assembly is slated to begin late next year in Indiana, and the company already cites more than 100,000 reservations—an early sign that demand for a no-frills electric workhorse is real.

Despite the straightforward spec—manual windows, a minimal list of features, and a 240-mile range—Slate is leaning hard on ease of ownership. Buyers will have access to the Tesla Supercharger network, which includes more than 25,000 charging stations across the United States, along with roughly 4,000 independent service centers certified under the RepairPal program. For a budget EV pickup, that combination of charging reach and service coverage looks like the headline advantage.

Those shops are set up to handle not only routine maintenance but also complex electrical repairs, with training and materials provided by the manufacturer. The company also plans to launch Slate University, an online hub of video lessons and step-by-step guides for owners and mechanics. Blending DIY-friendly resources with a wide service backbone should help lower the barrier to first-time EV ownership.
