HORSE has unveiled a new 1.5‑liter gasoline engine designed for hybrid powertrains and extended-range electric vehicles (EREV). The naturally aspirated four-cylinder delivers 110 hp and meets the Euro 6e and Euro 6e bis standards that take effect from early 2025. The figures are deliberately modest, aligned with hybrid duty rather than standalone fireworks.

Engineered with both European and Chinese markets in mind, the unit aims to cut adaptation and certification costs for automakers. Its design is close to the engine used in the new Mercedes CLA, but without turbocharging and oriented toward electrified setups—a choice that fits its stated purpose.

The engine is intended for HEV, PHEV, and EREV applications. In an MHEV layout with a 48‑volt system, output rises to 130 hp, while in PHEV configurations the combined system can reach up to 218 hp. As a complement, HORSE proposes a purpose-built three-speed automatic transmission for hybrids, positioned as the optimal pairing.

So far, only Geely has confirmed interest, planning to use the engine in the Starray EM-i for Eastern Europe. Potential deployment is also being considered for new vehicles slated for 2026. It’s a cautious but meaningful move that sets a clear direction for the program.
