BYD Shark Ambassador: limited 30-unit PHEV pickup gets a price cut in Brazil

BYD launches the Shark Ambassador in Brazil: a 30-unit PHEV pickup priced 19,810 reais below the standard model, with 437 hp and 29.6 kWh battery capacity.

BYD’s first foray into the midsize pickup segment, the Shark, is selling in Brazil well below expectations. From January to November 2025, just 1,004 units found buyers, leaving it behind the class’s key rivals. To reignite interest and sharpen the pickup’s profile with Brazil’s agro community, BYD has introduced its first Shark special edition, the Ambassador, aligned with the brand’s media figure, singer Gustavo Lima.

The run is strictly limited to 30 vehicles. Half will come in black, the rest in an exclusive green—a cosmetic tweak that’s essentially the only exterior difference. The real play is pricing: the Ambassador is listed at 359,990 reais, undercutting the standard model’s recommended price by 19,810 reais. For a pickup, that kind of discount tends to speak louder than paint.

Under the skin, nothing changes: the Shark remains a plug-in hybrid pairing a 1.5-liter turbo engine with two electric motors and a 29.6-kWh battery. Combined output is rated at 437 hp. In today’s market, that helps frame it as a power-focused PHEV pickup; among directly comparable electrified options, only the new Foton Tunland V7/V9 are cited, with a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup and a 2.0-liter diesel. The spec leans on strength rather than frugality—an angle that can resonate if communicated clearly.

In parallel, BYD is preparing a smaller pickup, technically close to the Song Pro, with a potential launch in 2026. For Chinese brands in this space, the playbook is familiar: expand the lineup and meet demand across formats. Done right, a two-pronged pickup strategy could give BYD the showroom coverage it has been missing.
