Best lightweight electric cars with real 300+ km range

We compare lightweight electric cars delivering real 300+ km range, including Renault 5, Peugeot e‑208 and Alpine A290, with Hyundai Inster the best value pick.

Electric cars have a built-in flaw: excess weight. The battery piles on hundreds of kilograms, which hurts both efficiency and the driving feel. As the market matures, though, efficiency is moving to the forefront. More and more models keep their heft in check and still manage 300-plus kilometers in real-world use without resorting to oversized packs.

The roster of light long-distance contenders is a mixed crowd. It starts with the Alpine A290, a performance-leaning take on a shared Renault platform that is credited with about 310 km of real range at roughly 1.55 tonnes. A touch more pragmatic is the Opel Corsa Electric with a 54‑kWh battery: around 315 km and about 1.54 tonnes. A similar balance defines the reborn Renault 4 — roughly 315 km at around 1.54 tonnes, with an emphasis on practicality and style. On paper, these numbers sketch a recipe that should feel alert without demanding compromises in everyday use.

From there, the spotlight shifts to models that make efficiency their headline. The Peugeot e‑208 is good for approximately 335 km while keeping mass near 1.53 tonnes. The electric Nissan Micra, sharing its base with the Renault 5 and Alpine A290, stays close to 330 km and remains in the lightweight bracket. As expected, the Renault 5 sits among the front-runners: about 335 km at roughly 1.50 tonnes — a sensible sweet spot for the city and calmer stretches of highway. The figures hint at cars that won’t wear you out between charges and will respond cleanly to inputs.

The winner, however, is the Hyundai Inster. It is noticeably lighter than the rest — about 1.41 tonnes — and in its extended-range version it clears the 300‑km mark, while also coming out ahead on price. With less mass to lug around, the gains in efficiency and ease of use should be the most tangible here.
