GM's Skyglass trademark targets fixed and sliding panoramic roofs
General Motors files the Skyglass trademark for fixed sunroofs and sliding panoramic roofs, aiming to unify branding across models including the Celestiq.
General Motors has filed a trademark application for the name Skyglass, intended for glass vehicle roofs. The documents were submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on December 17, 2025, and the filing is now under review.
As described in the filing, Skyglass covers fixed glass sunroofs and sliding panoramic roofs supplied as part of a vehicle’s structure. The application makes no mention of power-operated sunroofs and does not specify particular GM models or brands.
GM already fits large glass and panoramic roofs to several vehicles, including the Chevrolet Traverse, Equinox, Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado EV, the GMC Yukon, and the Cadillac Celestiq. In the Celestiq, Smart Glass technology is used to vary the transparency of the roof and the amount of light entering the cabin.
Securing a distinct name could help the company present these roof solutions as a unified technology, much like the branding used for infotainment suites or suspension systems. For shoppers, a clear, memorable label often makes options easier to compare, and Skyglass could become a visible piece of GM’s marketing in the years ahead.
